Valencia sails on the front line of international sport with SailGP

Valencia, 03 February 2026 – Valencia adds a new major international event to its calendar with the arrival of SailGP, the high-speed sailing competition known as the Formula 1 of the sea. From 2026 and for three consecutive seasons, the city will host the Spanish stop of this global championship, which tours some of the world’s leading coastal cities.

The Spain Sail Grand Prix | Valencia will be held for the first time on 5 and 6 September 2026, placing Valencia on an international calendar that includes destinations such as New York, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, Bermuda and Portsmouth. A decision that brings the city into the spotlight of major sailing events and strengthens its international projection.

An event with real impact on the economy and city image

Created in 2017 by Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts, key figures in international sailing with strong ties to Valencia, SailGP brings together 12 national teams and combines sport, technology, innovation and sustainability in a highly attractive format for global audiences.

The experience of the previous Spanish stop highlights the scale of this type of competition. According to Deloitte, recent editions generated an economic impact close to €100 million, boosting tourism, business activity and international visibility.

The Mediterranean as a natural setting

Sailing conditions, Valencia’s historic relationship with the sea and its experience in hosting international events have been key factors in this choice. This was highlighted by Russell Coutts, CEO of SailGP:

“Valencia brings together all the elements to become one of the most attractive stops on the championship calendar.”

From the Spanish team, pilot Diego Botín underlined the close bond between the city and sailing. Wind, sea and a passionate fan base that lives the sport from the water.

A city looking out to the world

The arrival of SailGP adds to other major international events that reinforce Valencia’s position as an open, dynamic city ready for global projects. Such as the Copa del Rey basketball tournament at the Roig Arena.

From Invest in Valencia, these events go beyond sporting or tourism impact. They help project Valencia as an attractive city for international companies, talent and investment. Showcasing an environment capable of hosting global initiatives, generating economic opportunities and offering quality of life.

Valencia looks once again to the sea… and to the world.
