St Vincent the Martyr, Patron Saint of Valencia: tradition and future

Valencia, January 22, 2026 – We often speak about Valencia in terms of quality of life, business ecosystem, infrastructure or talent. However, there is another essential element that defines the city and reinforces its appeal as a place to live, invest and develop projects: its culture and its history.

Every January 22, the city of Valencia pauses its activity to celebrate a unique local holiday: Saint Vincent the Martyr, the city’s exclusive patron saint. This public holiday is celebrated only in Valencia and reflects the deep connection between the city and its historical legacy.

Saint Vincent the Martyr, a key figure in the history of Valencia

Saint Vincent the Martyr was a deacon in Roman Valentia and, according to Christian tradition, was martyred in the year 304 AD during the persecutions ordered by Emperor Diocletian. His death took place in the city itself, making him one of the earliest religious and civic symbols of Valencia.

From Roman, Visigothic and medieval times onwards, his figure has remained closely linked to the city’s urban identity.

Unlike other regional or national celebrations, the feast of Saint Vincent the Martyr has a strictly local character. As with Saint Isidore in Madrid or Saint Eulàlia in Barcelona, it is a symbol of the city rather than the territory. For this reason, January 22 is a public holiday only in the city of Valencia and not in the rest of the Valencian Community.

A local holiday that reflects identity and global outlook

This celebration also reflects a city that values its roots while looking to the future. A Valencia that combines tradition and innovation, heritage and internationalisation, and understands culture as a core element of its identity and global positioning.

In an international context, this balance between history, quality of life and economic dynamism is one of the key assets that define Valencia as an attractive environment for talent, investment and long-term projects.
