Valencia, May 8, 2025 – ICEYE, the Finnish company and global leader in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite technology, has inaugurated a new center for research, development, and manufacturing of satellite systems in Paterna (Valencia). This opening strengthens the Valencian Community’s position as a strategic hub within the European aerospace ecosystem. Reinforcing Spain’s standing as a key destination for the development of advanced space technologies.
ICEYE operates the world’s largest constellation of SAR satellites. Capable of monitoring any point on the planet in real time, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. Unlike conventional optical satellites, which are limited by darkness or cloud cover, this uninterrupted observation capability represents a technological breakthrough essential for security and defense in the face of geopolitical threats, as well as for civil protection and rapid response to extreme natural events, such as the floods caused by DANA.
The company, which works closely with government agencies and strategic sectors like defense, security, maritime surveillance, and insurance, plans to invest between €20 and €25 million in this new hub over the next three years. In addition, ICEYE aims to create more than 100 highly qualified jobs, thereby boosting local talent.
A Global-Focused Center with “Made in Spain” Technology
The new ICEYE center in Valencia will be the company’s second-largest facility worldwide after its base in Finland. The site will accelerate the development of next-generation earth observation and multisensor systems, with critical applications in climate resilience, disaster management, and global security.
“Valencia was chosen for its emerging New Space ecosystem, excellent technological infrastructure, and pool of highly qualified talent. Our goal is to bring together our global team of engineers, scientists, and innovators with Spanish professionals who can lead the development of ‘Made in Spain’ space solutions,” said Gonzalo García Muñoz, CEO of ICEYE Spain and Global Vice President of Operations.
ICEYE has also begun collaborations with academic institutions such as the Universitat Politècnica de València and is working with the Government of Spain on initiatives to strengthen national technological autonomy in the space and defense sectors.
Institutional Support from Valencia for the Space and Defense Sector
The inauguration event featured the presence of national and international authorities. Including Teresa Riesgo, Secretary General of Innovation at the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities; Sari Rautio, Ambassador of Finland to Spain; and Carlos Mazón, President of the Generalitat Valenciana. All highlighted the project’s strategic importance in innovation and quality employment.
From Invest in Valencia, ICEYE was supported throughout this process, helping position the city as a priority destination for international investment in advanced technology.
Valencia: A Rising Hub for European Aerospace and Defense
ICEYE’s arrival confirms Valencia’s role as a leading node in the European aerospace and defense industry. This investment not only generates employment, but also drives the development of cutting-edge technological capabilities with global impact.
